The Mix Bus Chain Explained: What Goes On the Stereo Output and Why
The mix bus is where everything comes together.
Every decision you’ve made across 40 tracks gets summed to a single stereo signal. The processing you put on this final output affects everything simultaneously — which makes it powerful, and dangerous.
Here’s what belongs on the mix bus, in what order, and why.
Principle: less is more
The mix bus is not a correction stage. If something is wrong in the mix, fix it in the mix. The mix bus chain adds final character and cohesion — it doesn’t compensate for mix problems.
A mix bus with 8 plugins is a mix with problems that weren’t solved in the mix.
Position 1: EQ (corrective, if needed)
If the mix has a persistent tonal issue — a broad low-mid accumulation, a slightly dull high end — a broad, gentle EQ on the mix bus can address it. Broad moves only: wide Q, 1–3dB maximum.
Many professional mixes require no corrective EQ on the mix bus. If your mix does, keep the moves minimal and ask why the issue exists in the mix itself.
Position 2: Compression (glue)
A gentle compressor on the mix bus catches the final sum and creates cohesion between all elements. Standard settings: 2:1, slow attack (30–60ms), medium release (150–300ms), 1–3dB of gain reduction.
The compressor should be on before you make mix decisions. Mix into the compression — all your fader and EQ decisions happen with the compressor engaged, so you hear the compressed result in real time.
The character of the compressor matters. Different compressor types add different tonal coloration: VCA compressors add clarity and punch; FET compressors add a forward, aggressive quality; optical compressors add transparency and musicality; variable-mu (tube) compressors add warmth and saturation.
Position 3: Saturation (optional, character)
A subtle saturation stage after the compressor adds harmonic density and warmth to the final sum. Tape emulation plugins are common choices here — they add the even-order harmonic characteristics of analog tape without heavy saturation artifacts.
Keep this gentle. The goal is to add character, not audible distortion.
Position 4: Stereo width (optional)
If the stereo image needs slight adjustment — narrowing the extreme edges for mono compatibility, or opening the high-frequency sides slightly — a mid/side EQ or stereo width adjustment here can make those changes.
Do this after listening in mono to ensure you’re working toward mono compatibility, not away from it.
What doesn’t belong on the mix bus
A limiter does not belong on the mix bus — unless you’re recording a rough mix for reference purposes. A limiter on the mix bus during the mix session prevents you from hearing the true dynamic behavior of the mix. If the mix hits the limiter hard during loud sections, you hear a falsely consistent result that hides a mix that’s actually too loud.
Leave limiting to the mastering stage.
The bounce: remove the limiter before sending
When you deliver the mix to mastering, the mix bus chain should ideally be: gentle compressor (if used throughout the mix) + nothing else. No limiter. No maximizer. No loudness-targeting plugin.
Give the mastering engineer a dynamic, headroom-rich mix to work with.
