Mixing for Streaming: What the Platforms Actually Do to Your Audio
When you upload music to Spotify, you’re not uploading to a passive storage service.
You’re uploading to a platform that will analyze your audio, measure its loudness, and then adjust its playback level — every time, for every listener. Understanding this changes how you should approach loudness in the mix.
What loudness normalization means
Loudness normalization is the process of adjusting playback levels so that every track plays at approximately the same perceived loudness. The goal: a listener on shuffle doesn’t experience a jarring volume jump between a quiet folk song and a heavily mastered pop track.
Each platform has a loudness target measured in LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale):
– Spotify: -14 LUFS (with “Normal” volume setting)
– Apple Music: -16 LUFS
– YouTube: -14 LUFS
– Tidal: -14 LUFS
If your master measures louder than these targets, the platform turns it down. If it measures quieter, most platforms leave it at its native level (rather than turning it up, to avoid amplifying noise).
What this means for the loudness war
A track mastered at -8 LUFS gets turned down by approximately 6dB on Spotify. A track mastered at -14 LUFS plays at its native level. Both play at the same perceived loudness on the platform.
The -8 LUFS master has been compressed and limited more aggressively to achieve that loudness — and it plays at no advantage over the -14 LUFS master. The only difference: it arrives at the listener with less dynamic range and more compression artifacts.
This is why aggressive limiting hurts more than it helps on streaming platforms.
What to target
For a mix intended for streaming, target a master that measures around -14 LUFS integrated with a peak ceiling of -1 to -1.5dBFS (true peak). This is the “transparent” zone — the master plays at native level without being turned down, and there’s room for the platform’s encoding process without inter-sample peaks causing distortion.
Importantly: don’t target these numbers in the mix. Let your mastering engineer target them. Your job in the mix is to deliver headroom, good dynamics, and correct balance. The mastering stage handles the loudness target.
Encoding and lossy compression
Every streaming platform encodes your WAV or AIFF file into a compressed format for delivery — MP3, AAC, or OGG depending on the platform and quality tier. This encoding process can introduce small artifacts, particularly in complex high-frequency content.
Bright, dense mixes with lots of high-frequency information encode less cleanly than mixes with more controlled high ends. Excessive sibilance, dense overtone stacks, and heavy limiting artifacts often become more audible after encoding.
Check your mix on the platform’s own playback after release. Does the high end still sound controlled? Does the low end hold up? Platform listening is the final truth.
The mono mobile listener
A significant proportion of streaming listeners are on mobile devices — mono Bluetooth speakers, phone speakers, earbuds. These don’t reproduce stereo or sub-bass effectively.
A mix that works on a single phone speaker is a mix that works everywhere. Check yours in mono before the final bounce. Check the low end on earbuds. These checks reveal problems that studio monitor listening hides.
