Two tools, one result: controlling level.

But they work at different points in the signal chain, and choosing the wrong one creates problems that the right one would avoid.

What clip gain does

Clip gain (also called region gain, event gain, or clip volume depending on your DAW) adjusts the level of a specific audio clip before it reaches any processing on the track. It’s the level of the raw audio event.

This means: when you use clip gain, every plugin on the track receives the adjusted level. If you’ve cut 3dB of clip gain from a loud vocal phrase, the compressor, EQ, and all other processing receive a signal that’s 3dB quieter. The processing responds to this changed input level.

What fader automation does

Fader automation moves the track fader at a point after all the track’s processing. The signal has already passed through EQ, compression, and other plugins before the fader acts on it.

This means: fader automation changes the output level of the processed signal without changing how the processing behaves.

When to use clip gain

Use clip gain to correct inconsistent source material before it reaches your processing.

A vocal that has dramatically different loudness between takes — one phrase at -6dB and the next at -14dB — should have this inconsistency corrected with clip gain before compression. If the compressor receives these wildly different input levels, it behaves inconsistently: compressing aggressively on the loud phrase, barely touching the quiet one. The result is inconsistent compression behavior.

Clip gain the loud phrase down and the quiet phrase up before the compressor. Now the compressor receives consistent input and responds consistently. This is gain staging, not automation.

When to use fader automation

Use fader automation for intentional musical level changes that happen after the sound has been processed to its final character.

A chorus that should be 2dB louder than a verse: fader automation. A vocal phrase that needs to fade out at the end of a section: fader automation. A build that involves gradual level increase over 8 bars: fader automation.

These are dynamic choices about the music’s emotional arc, applied after the sound is already shaped by the processing chain.

The compressor behavior difference

The most important distinction: when you use clip gain, you’re changing the compressor’s input level. This changes how hard the compressor works. Lower clip gain = less compression. Higher clip gain = more compression.

When you use fader automation, the compressor behavior is unchanged. The fader move is invisible to every plugin upstream.

If you want consistent, repeatable compression behavior, use clip gain to normalize the input levels before the compressor. Then use fader automation to make output-level decisions.

The practical workflow

Step 1: Clip gain editing — go through the session and correct major inconsistencies in source material. This is not about perfect consistency; it’s about removing dramatic outliers that would disrupt processing.

Step 2: Set your processing with this normalized input in mind.

Step 3: Fader automation — make musical level decisions about what should be louder or quieter in each section of the song.
