How to Use a VU Meter in Mixing (And Why It Changes How You Hear Levels)
Your DAW’s level meters lie to you.
They show you peak values — the instantaneous highest point of any given signal. This is useful for avoiding clipping. It’s nearly useless for mixing decisions.
The VU meter shows you something different: average level. And average level is much closer to what you actually hear.
What a VU meter measures
A VU (Volume Unit) meter responds slowly — its ballistics are calibrated to integrate over approximately 300ms. This means it ignores fast transients and responds to the sustained energy of a signal. A drum hit causes the VU needle to barely move. A sustained pad causes the needle to settle clearly.
This is intentional. Human hearing integrates over time in a similar way. The perceived loudness of a sound is not its peak value — it’s its average energy over time. A quiet sustained tone can feel louder than a loud transient, because the sustained tone has more average energy.
Using a VU meter for gain staging
The classic use: calibrate your VU meter so that 0 VU corresponds to a specific level in your DAW (often -18 or -14dBFS). Set up individual channel VUs and aim for signals to average around 0 VU during the loudest sustained sections.
What this tells you: how loud each element actually sounds, not how high its peaks go. A kick drum might peak at -6dBFS but average at -24dBFS because most of its energy is in the transient. A sustained organ might peak at -12dBFS but average at -14dBFS because it has constant energy.
These two instruments might feel completely different in level despite having similar peaks. The VU shows you this difference immediately.
VU on the mix bus: calibrating your loudness
A VU meter on the mix bus (your stereo output) tells you how loud your mix actually sounds before any mastering processing. A mix averaging -18 to -14 VU on the mix bus has appropriate headroom and perceived loudness for mastering.
A mix consistently driving into +3 VU is too hot — you’re working in a headroom-limited environment where every decision is made under compression or clipping conditions. Your ears are adjusting to this without you realizing it.
The listening change
The practical effect of using a VU meter is that it changes what you reach for first. When you see a sustained element averaging -6 VU while everything else is averaging -12 VU, the level problem is immediately visible. Without it, you’d reach for EQ to “fix” the muddiness — but the real problem is simply level.
VU metering reveals dynamic imbalances that peak metering hides.
The limitation
VU meters don’t tell you about clipping. Keep your peak meters visible for clip prevention. The VU handles loudness; the peak meters handle headroom. Use both.
