How to Structure a Mix Session for Better Results
Most mixing problems aren’t technical. They’re organizational.
You open the session, start turning knobs on the first thing that sounds wrong, and two hours later you’re deep in a vocal chain rabbit hole while the low end is still a disaster. Structure prevents this.
Before you touch anything: listen
The first thing to do in a mix session is play the whole song without touching a single control. Just listen.
What’s the most obvious problem? What’s standing out too much? What’s buried? What’s the emotional center of the song that needs to be served?
Form an intention before you act. The intention shapes all subsequent decisions. A mix for a sparse singer-songwriter track needs different priorities than a dense electronic production. Decide before you start processing what the mix needs to become.
Step 1: Gain staging
Before anything else, set levels so the mix bus isn’t already clipping and individual tracks aren’t too hot or too quiet for processing. Every plugin responds differently to input level. A compressor receiving a hot signal behaves differently than one receiving a moderate signal.
Aim for individual tracks peaking around -18 to -12dBFS before processing. Mix bus headroom of at least 6dB before any limiting.
Step 2: Rough balance
Set static fader levels with no processing. Just levels and panning. The goal: get the mix to a rough shape where the main elements are present and balanced before any EQ or compression. This rough balance tells you what the actual problems are.
Many engineers are surprised by how close the rough balance is to the final mix. The processing refines the balance; it shouldn’t create it.
Step 3: Drums and low end first
The foundation drives all other decisions. Get the kick, bass, and their relationship working before working on anything else. Every other element will be mixed against this foundation.
If the low end is wrong, every decision made afterward is built on a broken foundation.
Step 4: Harmonic instruments and mid-range
Once the foundation is set, bring in the harmonic elements — guitars, piano, synths — and find their place around the foundation. This is where complementary EQ decisions happen: who owns which frequency range, who yields to whom.
Step 5: Vocals
The vocal is typically the most important element and should be mixed against the foundation and harmonic content that already exists. If the vocal can’t cut through at this stage, look for what’s masking it — it’s probably a harmonic element competing in the 1–4kHz range.
Step 6: Effects, automation, polish
Reverb, delay, and spatial processing come last. These are decisions about dimension and movement, not about balance. Adding reverb to an unbalanced mix creates beautiful problems that are harder to solve.
Automation is the final shaping — level moves, filter rides, effects that change over time.
Time limits keep you honest
Fresh ears make better decisions. Mix for no more than 2–3 hours, then take a break. Check decisions on headphones and on a different playback system. Come back. The problems you missed while immersed become obvious within seconds of a fresh listen.
